Vintage Mugler is being introduced to a whole new generation thanks to Cardi B whose stylist is doing an amazing job. Most recently at the Grammy's Cardi sported three different vintage Mugler looks. The red carpet look was the “Venus” dress from the 1995 Mugler Couture show, her acceptance dress for Best Rap Album was the white fringe dress from the 1997 couture show and finally, her performance look was the leopard print bodysuit with accompanying peacock tail from the 1997 show. While the new people being introduced to Mugler see them as more of a costume and being way too weird to those interested in fashion were having a field day. It’s not every day that an archive Mugler look is going to be strutting down the red carpet and I imagine many people would have never expected this to happen. However, Cardi is not the only one to help with this resurgence.

Vintage Mugler is the epitome of timeless fashion. Created by Thierry Mugler in 1973 the label became incredibly popular in the late 80s and 90s for its runway shows. Always big, bold and spectacular the shows usually lasted well over 30 minutes and included models like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Irina Pantaeva, Carmen Dell Orefice and Violeta Sanchez. Thierry always used models from every spectrum of age, gender, size and colour and his shows seem to me to be incredibly inclusive. The outfits were always extravagant and theatrical while also being incredibly fashionable. The use of corsetry and cinching and throughout his work created the perfect hourglass shape.

Kim Kardashian decided to wear a vintage cutout dress to the 2019 Hollywood Beauty Awards. The dress that was initially worn in the 1998 Mugler show caused lots of controversy. Irina Shayk donned the iconic bodysuits from Mugler including the gold robotic bodysuit from the 1995 show for Paris Match magazine in February. Solange Knowles wore the silver robot bodysuit from the 1992 show for her new album When I Get Home. Drag queens have always been ahead of the curve and have always worn garments inspired by Mugler including Detox who wore a full Mugler look on All-Stars 2 for the “Pants on the Runway” theme.
Most recently Mugler held an exhibition in Montreal in which the best of his vintage work was shown, alongside him was Kim Kardashian who now seems to be a muse for Mugler, Violet Chachki who is the epitome of a vintage Mugler show, ‘90s supermodel Pat Cleveland and Tyra Banks (I'm not exaggerating when I say I would have killed someone to attend) It seems like more and more people are catching on to the brilliance of vintage Mugler.
But all good things must become cheapened. With the popularisation of Mugler, fast fashion brands like Fashion Nova must rip it off to sell to an audience who only want to wear it because of a celebrity wearing it and not the brilliance of the garment. This was done directly after Kim Kardashian wore the cutout dress and it needs to be stopped. I will always love the look of Mugler however if someone sports fast fashion, knock-off Mugler I will hate that person until the end of time.

All I can hope for is that Cardi’s stylist keeps up this incredible streak and truly all I want is to see Mugler all the time, at every event, forever.
