Puffer jackets. I don't know about you but I vehemently hate them, with at least six passions. So bulky, so rolly, so popular. Puffer jackets have always been around but in the past three years they have really taken off amongst teens.
Turning a puffer jacket into something exciting is something that I would imagine is hell. However, Moncler delivered it to us in the form of Pierpaolo Piccioli.
Before going any further I should probably give a little insight into who Pierpaolo is and how this Moncler thing happened.
So, Pierpaolo is currently the creative director of Valentino and has been since 2008 and he has truly changed the face of fashion. His collections are often the most anticipated of Milan Fashion Week and over the years his designs have been worn by Gaga during The Goldren Globes, Frances McDormand at the Met Gala, and most recently Naomi Scott at the Kids Choice Awards. Big and bold silhouettes are his deal and we’re all investing.
Moving on to Moncler. In 2018, Moncler created the Moncler Genius project in which they asked eight designers to create collections that stay true to Moncler’s style as well as the designers. This was to appeal to a larger audience and give the brand a chance to have people see them as more than just a plain puffer jacket. Pierpaolo was asked to be one of the designers along with Irish designer Simone Rocha.
So on Feb 28, 2018, Pierpaolo delivered what will go down in fashion history as one of the most unique collections ever. Dresses, nay, more like full-length GOWNS. But in the style of a puffer jacket. Now at first when I saw this collection I recoiled in disgust and quite honestly thought the style was coming to an end. However, when Ezra Miller wore a head to toe Pierpaolo x Moncler coat dress to the Fantastic Beasts premiere in 2018 I was sold. The boldness and innovation truly jumped out, and so did the talent.
In 2019 Pierpaolo went above and beyond in the second collection. Firstly outdoing himself in innovation and secondly in using models of colour. What a statement. The artistry behind the looks are truly incredible and if I were looking create an impact on the red carpet I would be wearing one of these outfits.
Applause all round for Pierpaolo. Also, you can actually buy the jackets from his collection here. I can't wait to see what comes next.
